Abortion is the Largest Single Cause of Death in Europe

Douglas Knight:

Marriage and birth rates are falling dramatically, pensioners now outnumber teenagers, and more and more people are living alone, says the Institute for family policy in a survey of life in the 27 EU countries.

The report, ‘The evolution of the family in Europe in 2008’, was debated in parliament on Wednesday and describes the European birth rate as “critical”.

Urging national governments to set up a ministry for the family, it says, “Europe is now an elderly continent. Almost one in every five pregnancies ends in abortion. The marriage rate fell by 24 per cent between 1980 and 2006. Two out of three households have no children, and nearly 28 per cent of households contain only one person.”

It says the average marriage lasts about 13 years and the number of abortions in the EU every year is put at 1.2 million – equivalent to the population of Slovenia. That makes abortion the largest single cause of death in Europe.

It warns: “Europe is undergoing a demographic winter, and now, Europe is an elderly continent.”

Tony Jones and Collin Hansen Discuss Emergents and the Young Reformed

Christianity Today has recently posted a discussion between Tony Jones and Collin Hansen.

CT:

Hansen’s book begins with a note comparing the relative obscurity of the new Calvinism and the prominence of the emerging church. Among his interviewees was Tony Jones, national coordinator of Emergent Village, and author of the new book The New Christians: Dispatches from the Emergent Frontier.

Jones is the author of several previous books, but The New Christians is more journalistic in its approach, describing the origins of the emerging church, why it’s growing, and how it’s changing.

The books and movements share a number of themes: reaction against entertainment-driven church life, desire for transcendence, rediscovery of tradition, and a need to answer common misconceptions about the movements. Christianity Today invited Hansen and Jones to read each other’s books and discuss how the rise of one movement might illuminate aspects of the rise of the other. Are both movements scratching the same itch? Are there internal tensions in one movement that also appear in the other?

Below is a description of the book from Crossway:

This resource uncovers the presence of worldliness and helps believers learn to relate to the world while resisting its influence in their lives.

People today are saturated in technology and prosperity. They are bombarded with endless luxuries: clothes to wear, cars to buy, vacations to take, entertainment to enjoy. Yet this world, which offers so many pleasures, is actively opposed to God and the truth of His Word. How, then, is the believer to relate to the world in which he or she lives?

Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World uncovers the presence of worldliness—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes, and the boasting of what he has or does. Worldliness then reveals how Christians are to engage a fallen world and boldly preach the gospel, yet not be conformed and ultimately seduced by the system of this world.

As readers learn to identify the presence of worldliness in the areas of media, modesty, music, and material possessions, they can begin to resist its influence in their lives and instead pursue eternal godliness.

Jeremy “Passion” Manongdo

This is Jeremy Manongdo also known as “Passion” in the music industry from San Fransisco, CA. I was introduced to his music a couple of years ago by my sister Sarah. Much of his music has a lot of the R&B flavor that I grew up listening to back in the day. He’s got an incredible voice and is extremely talented. To check out his myspace page click here. You can also check out his youtube page by clicking here.

I am encouraged to see other young filipino brothers proclaiming the name of Christ so openly. Maybe it’s where I live but this is rare where I am from.

This is Jeremy leading worship.

This is Jeremy playing at the Urban Soul Cafe show at B.B. King’s Blues Club in downtown Nashville singing Here I am to Worship.
