holiness

Ligonier Ministries National Conference: The Holiness of God (March 19-21);

  • This is an expanded conference with more speakers than ever (Anyabwile, Begg, Carson, Duncan, Ferguson, Godfrey, Lawson, Mohler, Sproul Jr., Sproul, Thomas). Holiness is the characteristic of God’s nature that is at the very core of His being.  Without a proper grasp of God’s holiness we do not understand who He truly is, nor do we understand who we truly are. In our pre-conference seminar, we celebrate the 500th birthday of John Calvin.

Philidelphia Conference on Reformed Theology: Right with God – The Doctrine of Justification (3/27-29; 4/17-19; 5/1-3):

  • Ever since the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, the doctrine of sola fide — justification through faith alone — has been at the doctrinal center of evangelical religion. This doctrine was referred to as the material principle of the Reformation, that is, this was the heart of the matter for which the Reformed made their break in protest to Rome. But like so many other biblical teachings, justification has suffered from both neglect and abuse in recent years. Some of the most heated controversies within the church have concerned this doctrine, and with it the essential issue of how a sinner can be right with God.But justification is not just a doctrinal matter. This subject is of the greatest concern to the day-to-day life of every Christian. J. I. Packer has written that “Justification by faith is like an Atlas: it bears a world on its shoulders, the entire evangelical knowledge of saving grace.” The great Puritan, Thomas Watson, commented: “Justification is the very hinge and pillar of Christianity. An error about justification is dangerous, like a defect in a foundation. Justification by Christ is a spring of the water of life.”It is with these beliefs in mind that we will gather for our 38th meeting of the Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology to consider the doctrine of justification. Our goal will be more than to reaffirm the cherished convictions of classic theology, but also to return to God’s Word for answers to the questions pressing upon us today. The question of how sinners are made right with God is a timeless question, but its answer also needs to be given in light of the struggles of our present world.

Exponential 09 – National New Church Conference: The Art of Movements (April 20-23):

  • Our themes the past few years have been heavily biased to the “science” or “mechanics” of church planting. This year we will try and broaden our view to “The Art of Movements.” In our lifetime we’ve not experienced true church planting movements in the US…we’ve only seen them overseas. So, we will be featuring a number of international leaders likely unfamiliar in the U.S. Most conferences (including ours in the past) take the approach of “come and learn from us.” We are turning that upside down (or maybe right-side up!). In 2009 the call is “come and learn with us…as we experience the stories of those who are in the middle of movements…. as we discover what God is “up to” around the globe.” We’re prepared to be surprised, challenged, inspired, maybe even devastated by God’s heart for a world in desperate need of the Gospel of Christ.

The Gospel Coalition 2009 (April 21-23):

  • The theme of this Conference gets to the heart of the book of Second Timothy. As Paul is mentoring a young Timothy, he is communicating the great privilege of proclaiming the gospel to the world. In an age bereft of courageous leadership, declining biblical literacy, and rising cultural accommodation, a prophetic voice from the center is needed, a voice that faithfully speaks the ancient text to our contemporary context. This Conference seeks a renewal of faithful preaching that is rooted in the Scriptures and centered on the gospel…

NEXT 2009 Conference (May 23-29):

  • The vision of Next is to gather worshipers of Jesus Christ who burn with a passion to see the gospel transferred to the next generation. Next is about faithfully receiving the gospel—the message of Christ and him crucified–from those who have gone before us, holding fast to the gospel personally, and passing the gospel on to those coming after us.The idea behind Next was born when Joshua Harris, still in his twenties, wanted to expose other young men and women to older pastors and theologians who had profoundly affected his life. Josh started the New Attitude conference as a way to bring thousands of younger people and dozens of faithful pastors together to transfer the gospel faithfully from one generation to the next. In 2008 New Attitude ended and now Next is born—an even more focused way of helping see the gospel transferred and received faithfully.The focus of the conference is the younger generation: college students, singles, and young married couples. But we don’t check ID at the door. Anyone who has a passion to see gospel truth passed on, regardless of age, is welcomed.

sin

Resolved 2009: Sin (June 12-15):

  • In a strange and wonderful irony, the greatest problem on Earth is resolved by the greatest reality in Heaven.Sin—it is the poisonous nature of humanity. The depth and breadth of sin is evident everywhere in our world. It is the fundamental principle in every person and the driving momentum of every society. From our first parents in Eden to infants drawing their first breath this day, every human is infected with sin’s rebellion against God and His Word. As the Christmas carol languishes, “long lay the world in sin and error pining.”"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). This is the reality from Heaven that resolves sin. The gospel of Jesus Christ is God’s amazing and solitary resolution for sin and sinners. The death of Jesus stands forever as God’s most glorious act. And it was for the purpose of defeating sin.Resolved 2009 will focus on sin. What is sin? How bad is it? Where did it come from? How can I be saved from it and its consequences? Is it possible to stop? Our 5th Resolved Conference will explore these questions and provide biblical answers.John Owen wrote, “Be killing sin, or it will be killing you.” Join us at Resolved ‘09 as we rally to understand and battle sin.

Ligonier Ministries 2009 West Coast Conference: The Resurrection (September 25-26):

Ligonier Ministries 2009 Conference Cruise: One, Holy, Catholic, & Apostolic Church (September 28-October 2):

  • Many Christians reflect upon the purpose and consequences of Jesus’ resurrection only at Easter. This is distressing because the resurrection, as the event upon which Christianity stands or falls, should occupy first place in our thinking and living.Next fall, Ligonier Ministries will explore the resurrection at our West Coast conference in Seattle, Wash. Alistair Begg and Michael Horton will join me on September 25–26, 2009, in examining the significance of the resurrection of Christ for worship, preaching, apologetics, and other issues. Following the conference, Michael Horton and I will speak on the doctrine of the church on a separate Pacific Northwest cruise, September 28–October 2.A firm understanding of the resurrection is essential for confronting false teaching and looking forward to our life in the world to come. We invite you to join us on the West Coast next fall as we study God’s Word together.
